Budgie breeding boxes are basically just little wooden homes that copy the cosy tree holes wild budgies love. You’ll want untreated wood boxes around 9″x6″x6″ or 10″x6″x6″ – nothing fancy. The bottom should curve inward, so eggs don’t go rolling everywhere, plus a little perch by the entrance and a lid that opens easily.
- The Classic Wood Box
- Size: About 10″ long, 5″ wide, 5.5″ tall (give or take)
- Made from safe plywood or pine
- Has a round entrance hole (like 1.5-2 inches across) with a tiny peg outside for landing
- MUST have a removable or hinged top – trust me, you’ll need to check on babies and clean out poop
- The Bowl-Shaped Bottom Box
- Standard 9″x6″x6″ size
- Game changer: the curved floor keeps eggs bunched together in the middle since budgies don’t build nests like other birds
- Boxes with Secret Doors
- Some fancy ones (like the Nobby box on Amazon) have sliding trays or side doors
- Super handy for peeking at eggs/chicks without freaking out mum by lifting the roof
- Handmade Custom Jobs
- Hardcore breeders often build their own from safe wood
- Lets you tweak stuff like which side the entrance hole is on
- Techy folks sometimes rig up tiny cameras inside (yes, really)
