Removing the empty eggshell
Yes, you should totally take out the empty eggshells from the nest box, but like, don’t just grab them when the mom budgie is still in there. Wait till she comes out on her own, and wash your hands first—otherwise, you might freak her out or spread germs.
Okay, so here’s the deal with nest box stuff:
- Avoiding accidents: Broken eggshells can be sharp and might cover other eggs or even trap a baby chick. Not cool.
- Keep it clean: Taking out the old shells stops bacteria from building up. Also, don’t be too quick to toss unhatched eggs—sometimes they hatch later! Budgie eggs don’t all hatch at once (usually every couple days). If an egg hasn’t hatched after like 23–24 days, it’s probably dead, so you can remove it.
Oh yeah, don’t forget to give your budgie a calcium block and fresh food. Also, female budgies chill in the nesting box for up to ten days before laying eggs. She’ll come out sometimes to poop and snack, though. Super weird, but that’s how they roll.
