Budgies signal they’re ready to mate by acting extra flirty and showing some obvious body changes. When they’re in the mood, their hormones kick in (usually because of longer daylight and good food), and things get spicy.
Male budgies: Their little nose area (called the cere) turns this crazy bright blue—like, seriously noticeable.

Female budgies: Their cere, which is usually pale or white, gets dark brown and kinda crusty-looking.

Important: Don’t let them breed too young—wait till they’re at least a year old. Younger birds can get seriously hurt.
How they flirt:
- Feeding each other: The male will bob his head like crazy and puke up seeds for her (gross but sweet?).
- Eyes going wild: His pupils will shrink and expand superfast when he’s showing off.
- Beak tapping: They’ll gently tap beaks and groom each other like they’re on a date.
- The “come hither” move: When she’s ready, she’ll lift her tail and wings a bit to say, “Okay, let’s do this.”
Nesting stuff:
- She’ll hang out at the bottom of the cage or in the nest box, kicking bedding around like she’s rearranging furniture.
- She’ll also chew on the nest box entrance like she’s customizing her dream home.
If you wanna see what all this looks like in action, just watch for the head-bobbing, feeding, and little dance moves. Trust me, it’s obvious.
