A budgie’s whole life story—from tiny egg to full-grown bird—takes about 3–4 months. It’s wild how fast they grow! Here’s the breakdown in plain English:

From Egg to Awesome: The Budgie Lifecycle
Full Adult Mode (3-6 months)
Around 3–4 months they lose their baby feathers (first molt!) and get their fancy adult colours. Eyes develop a light ring, ceres change colour to show gender, and by 5–6 months? Ready to make babies of their own. Nature moves fast!
Egg Time (Days 1-18)
Mom budgie lays like 4–8 eggs, usually one every couple days. She and dad take shifts sitting on them like little feathered heaters—gotta keep those eggs cosy for about 18 days each. Teamwork makes the dream work!
Freshly Hatched (Days 1-10)
Newborn chicks look like naked pink jellybeans—no feathers, eyes shut tight. Super fragile! They just eat and sleep while mom and dad stuff food down their throats. By day 5, you can actually see the food in their neck pouch (kinda gross but cool).
Fluff Phase (Days 10-30)
Now we’re getting somewhere! Eyes pop open, tiny feathers start poking out, and they turn into little eating machines. Still mostly just hang out hidden in the nest box though.
Practice Makes Perfect (Days 30-40)
Now they’re fully feathered troublemakers! They start venturing out, testing their wings (with hilarious crash landings), and nibbling at soft foods. Basically toddler birds.
Bye Bye Baby Stage (Day 35-40)
No more handouts—they can eat on their own now! Still look a bit goofy though: all-black eyes and plain-coloured nose bumps (called ceres). Like awkward teenagers before their grow-up.
