Okay, so first things first – budgies need space. Like, way more than you’d think for such tiny birds. A single budgie should have a cage at least 20 inches long (and deep/wide), but honestly? Go bigger if you can. If you’ve got two, bump that up to 30 inches minimum – they’ll bicker less when they’ve got room to move.
Keeping Them Busy
These little guys are crazy smart and get bored easy. You’ll want to swap out their toys every so often – think bells, ladders, stuff they can shred. Otherwise, they’ll start redecorating their cage with their own feathers (not kidding).
Sleep Time
They need their beauty sleep – like 10–12 hours of dark, quiet time. Throw a light blanket over the cage at night (make sure it’s breathable though – no plastic bags, obviously).
Safety Stuff
Super important: budgie lungs are fragile. No scented candles, Febreze, Teflon pans smoking up the kitchen, or cigarette smoke. Basically if it smells “nice” to you, it’s probably killing them slowly.
Boy or Girl?
Once they’re grown, check the bump above their beak (called a cere). Boys usually have bright blue ones, girls are more tan/white/brown.
Chatty Birds
The males tend to be the talkers – they’ll pick up words and whistles easier. Though some females surprise you!
Making Friends
Don’t rush it. Start by just hanging out near their cage, talking quietly. Offer millet sprays (they’re like bird crack) before trying to handle them. It might take weeks, but seeing them choose to hop onto your finger? Best feeling ever.
