Building a budgie aviary? Hell yeah—your birds are going to love it! Way better than being cooped up in some tiny cage. Whether you’re DIY-ing it or buying one ready-made, just make sure it’s got the good stuff: strong wire mesh (nothing flimsy that predators can rip through), a cosy spot for them to sleep away from drafts, and one of those double-door systems, so nobody makes a break for it when you’re feeding them.
Basic Must-Haves:
- Space: At least 5 inches per bird in length, and half that in width. Sounds small, but trust me, they need wiggle room.
- Material: Skip cheap wire—go for galvanized hardware cloth (19 gauge) or PVC-coated stuff. No zinc, though—toxic for the little guys.
- Shelter: Cover at least a third of the aviary so they can hide from bad weather or blazing sun. And yeah, in winter, throw in a heat lamp unless you want frozen budgie popsicles.
- Predator Proofing: Seal it up tight—top, sides, and bottom. Cats, foxes, even rats will wreck your flock if you leave gaps.
Making It Fun For Them:
- Perches: Mix it up with different-sized branches (applewood is great). Keeps their feet strong and nails in check.
- Flooring: Dirt or grass lets them scratch around like they would in the wild. Just no pesticides—duh.
- Toys & Extras: Hang up ropes, ladders, foraging toys. Toss in a cuttlebone and vitamin water somewhere they can’t knock it over.
Buying One Instead?
If DIY isn’t your thing, check out places like:
- B&Q: Their walk-in aluminium cages run around £285-£360. Big enough you could almost chill in there with them.
- Garden and Animal Structures: Custom-built, heavy-duty aviaries with built-in shelters. Pricey but worth it if you’re not handy.
Pro tip: If your yard’s uneven, level the spot first. Nobody wants a lopsided bird mansion.
