For newly hatched chicks, mom and dad usually give them the best food. But if you gotta step in and hand-feed older chicks (around 4-5 weeks), here’s a simple homemade mix that’ll do the trick:
Easy Chick Mash Recipe
You’ll need:
- 1 hard-boiled egg (smash it up real fine, shell and all – the shell gives ’em calcium)
- A spoonful of cooked brown rice
- A tiny bit of soaked or cooked millet
- A spoon of crushed budgie pellets
- A couple spoons of grated veggies (broccoli, carrots – whatever’s fresh)
How to make it:
- Boil that egg for 15 mins, let it cool, then mash it to bits. Grind the shell into powder so it’s safe.
- Chuck everything in a bowl and mix until it looks like crumbly bird food.
- Put a little in a shallow dish – let the chicks figure it out as they learn to eat solids. Toss any leftovers after a few hours so it doesn’t go bad.
Important!
If you’ve got really tiny chicks (under 4 weeks) that need syringe feeding, DON’T use this homemade stuff. They need special store-bought formula (like Kaytee Exact or Lafeber’s) that’s perfectly balanced.
Pro tips for hand-feeding babies:
- Heat the formula to 102-108°F (use a thermometer – too hot burns their crop!)
- Make fresh batches every time and keep everything super clean
If the parents ditched the chick, or you’re in an emergency situation, call an avian vet ASAP. Better safe than sorry with these little guys.
