Aviary Basic Setup

A budgie aviary is basically like a sweet little bird mansion where your feathered friends can zoom around, hang out together, and stay active. Doesn’t matter if it’s inside or outside—just make sure it’s roomy, safe, and comfy, especially with the UK’s moody weather.
Must-Haves for Your Budgie Pad:
- Space: Two budgies need a space at least 180cm long, 90cm wide, and 120cm tall. Basically, give each bird about 13cm of length to stretch their wings—nobody likes feeling cramped.
- Mesh: Skip the flimsy chicken wire (rats can chew through that, and zinc coating is bad news). Go for sturdy welded mesh with 12mm–16mm gaps—stainless steel or plastic-coated is best.
- Double Doors: Ever seen a budgie bolt when you open the door? Yeah, me too. Add a little entryway (like a tiny porch) so they can’t make a break for it while you’re cleaning or feeding them.
- Shelter: At least a third of the aviary should be fully covered—think of it like their cosy living room where they can escape rain, wind, or blazing sun.
- Perches & Fun Stuff: Throw in some natural wooden perches (apple, eucalyptus, or hazel branches work great) in different thicknesses. Keeps their feet healthy and stops them from getting bored.
Basically, if you’d wanna hang out in there, your budgies will love it too.
